Why Brij
The tutor you wish you'd had.
Brij started because the gap between a South African classroom and an international university offer is wider than it should be — and it is almost never a question of ability.
Over four years and several hundred hours of teaching, working with students from early secondary school through to final-year applicants, one pattern repeats: the students who get through are not the cleverest ones. They are the ones who found out early exactly what was being asked of them, and had someone in their corner who had done it themselves.
That is the whole idea. Not more hours — the right hours, with the right person.
Recent graduates, not career tutors
Your tutor sat these exact papers recently enough to remember what they actually demanded — not what the syllabus document claims. That is the difference between knowing the content and knowing the exam.
Personality and results, together
Students work harder for someone they like. We hire for both: people who are genuinely good company for an hour, and who are ruthless about the mark you walked in wanting.
One-to-one, always
No group sessions, no shared screens with four other students. Every hour is built around one student's gaps, one student's exam date, one student's target.
Parents stay in the loop
Session notes after every lesson and a written plan from the start. You should never have to ask how it is going, or wonder what you are paying for.
The method
A method, not just more hours.
Anyone can sell you extra time with a textbook open. Every Brij student moves through the same four stages, and you can see exactly where you are in them at any point.
01
Diagnose
We find the real gap, not the obvious one.
Most students who are struggling in Maths are not struggling with this year's Maths. The first session is a proper diagnostic: we work backwards through the syllabus until we find the exact point where things stopped making sense, and we start there.
02
Map
We plan backwards from the grade you want.
You get a written learning plan built from your target grade and your exam date — which topics, in which order, by when. No vague promises to 'work on the weak areas'. You and your parents can see exactly what the term looks like.
03
Bridge
We teach for understanding, then for recall.
Sessions are active. You explain concepts back, work problems live, and get corrected in the moment rather than a week later. We build the bridge from where you are to where the examiner expects you to be — and we make sure you can cross it without us.
04
Prove
We test it under real exam conditions.
Understanding a topic and performing under timed pressure are different skills. We drill past papers with examiner-style marking, so the first time you sit a paper against the clock is never the real one.
What we teach
Maths and SAT, done properly.
Local tutoring rarely fits an international syllabus. We teach mathematics and the Digital SAT, and only these — so there is no time lost translating between systems, and nothing on this page we cannot actually deliver.

Scholar depends on giving a small number of students genuinely high-energy, high-impact attention all year, so places are deliberately limited — and this year's are taken. Check back soon in case one opens up, or start with sessions or a workshop in the meantime.
Single sessions are R400/hour, billed as you go. Tell us where things stand and we will tell you honestly which of these is worth your money — or whether none of them is, yet.
The honest test of a tutor is whether a student would recommend them to a friend. These are from families we have worked with.
I had been getting 4s in Maths AA HL since the start of DP1 and genuinely thought that was my ceiling. Working backwards to find what I had never properly understood changed the whole thing. The past-paper marking was brutal in the best way.

What sold us was the written plan after the first session. We had used two tutors before and never once had anyone tell us what the actual problem was. Here we could see the term mapped out, week by week.

The SAT prep was the most organised thing I did in my whole application year. Full timed mocks every week meant that by the time I sat the real one it felt completely routine.

Having the same person help with both my A Level Maths and my personal statement made a real difference. They already knew where I was strong, so the application actually sounded like me instead of a template.

My daughter came out of the first session and said, for the first time, that she thought she could actually do maths. That shift was worth more to us than the marks, and the marks came anyway.

Sessions never felt like being lectured at. I was doing the explaining half the time, which is exactly when I found out what I did not actually know.

Questions
Before you ask.
The things families most often want to know. If yours is not here, ask us directly — we answer every enquiry personally.
Sessions are online by default, which is how we work with students across South Africa and in several other time zones. Online lessons use a shared digital whiteboard, and you get the annotated notes from every session afterwards. In-person sessions are possible in Cape Town by arrangement.
Do you cover my specific exam board?
Right now we teach mathematics only — Cambridge IGCSE, AS and A Level, and IB Maths at any level — plus full Digital SAT preparation. We are deliberately not listing subjects we cannot yet staff properly. If you need another subject, send us an enquiry: we are bringing more tutors on, and we would rather tell you honestly where things stand than take a booking we cannot deliver.
Who will actually be teaching me?
Recent top graduates who sat these exact papers and did well in them. That matters more than it sounds: someone who wrote the Digital SAT or IB Maths HL in the last few years remembers what the papers actually demand, not what the syllabus document says they demand.
What happens in the first session?
A full diagnostic. We work backwards through the syllabus to find the exact point where things stopped making sense, and you leave with a written learning plan mapped to your target grade and exam date. It is a working session, not a sales call.
Can I change my mind after buying?
Yes. For Sessions and Scholar, if you have not used a session you can request a full refund within 14 days of purchase; after sessions have been used we refund the unused portion at the standard hourly rate. Workshop seats are refundable up to 7 days before the date, and transferable to another date or another student after that. Full details are in our terms.
How does the Collective workshop actually work?
It is a three-hour live online session, capped at 50 students. When you book you tell us what you want covered — topics, or specific past-paper questions — and we build the session around what comes in. You get the annotated slides and full worked solutions afterwards, plus the recording for two weeks.
Can I pay for Scholar monthly?
Yes. Scholar can be paid up front at a discount, or in ten monthly instalments collected automatically from your card. The instalment plan is a commitment to the full programme fee rather than a rolling subscription, so the total is the same either way. If your circumstances change, talk to us — we would rather sort something out than have you stuck.
How do I book sessions once I have paid?
For one-to-one work we email you within one working day of your payment to arrange your first session and set up a regular slot. For a workshop there is nothing to arrange — your joining link arrives by email the day before.
What if I need to reschedule a session?
Reschedule free of charge with at least 24 hours' notice. Inside 24 hours, the session is counted as used — tutors hold that time for you and turn down other work for it.
Do you help with university applications as well as marks?
Our Scholar programme combines tutoring with university shortlisting, personal statements and admissions essays — but places are limited and it is currently full. Ask to join the waiting list and we will let you know the moment one opens.
Can we pay by EFT instead of card?
Card is the fastest way to secure your place and confirms instantly. Instant EFT is also available at checkout, except on the Scholar monthly plan — recurring instalments can only be collected from a card. If you would prefer a traditional bank transfer or need an invoice for a company or trust, send us an enquiry and we will arrange it.
